Notes from Head Coach Tom Steen: Practices after week #1: 5-7pm daily, starting week 2 (Aug. 13). We do not practice on Sundays. We also will not schedule any practice sessions on Saturdays in August nor during the Labor Day weekend. We may, on occasion, schedule a Saturday morning practice in Sept/Oct if we do not have a match. Absences from practices: I encourage all players to clear your schedules so you can be ready to give 100% in attendance and effort. However, some of you may have conflicts especially in the early season (end of summer vacation). Across the entire season, in my decisions about playing time and team assignments, I will give priority to players who attend all practice sessions. Team membership & assignments: In soccer at RRHS, all players who attend practices faithfully and who give their best effort to the team can become team members. We do not eliminate or "cut" players. We do assign players to either the Varsity or JV squads (we may assign some players to both squads). We make assignments--varsity or JV--after the first week, and for 2007, we plan to stick with these assignments for the season (with a few exceptions). To encourage the development of younger players, we divide the JV team into two squads with coaches and match schedules for each squad. Our objectives are to a) field the most competitive varsity team we can, b) use the JV squads to develop skills and game sense, and c) to place all players at levels where they have the best chance to develop their abilities and to play against evenly-matched opponents. At any point during the season, we invite players to discuss with us any questions that they might have over our assignment and our evaluation of their skills. We invite parent questions and suggestions as well, but we ask that you to talk with Tom. As head coach, he is responsible for all player assignments--both varsity and JV. Freshman players: At RRHS, we have a policy that 9th graders will be assigned to the JV team. The 9th graders will become the seniors in just 3 more seasons, and we've learned that the teams with the deepest senior squads are the most successful teams at the end of the season. Therefore, we want to start developing the 9th grade group as soon as possible when their high school experience begins. However, we may "bring up" very talented freshman players to the varsity if we think they can be regulars and if they have the size, speed, and skills to match up safely with older players. We want them to be able to make a significant contribution to the varsity team's success. Captains for 2007: Derek Axtman, Dillon McLeod, and Lucas Nordrum Contacting the coaches: During the season, the best time to reach any of us is after practice (not game nights please) between 8-9pm.
